At Rock Art Australia, we believe the study of rock art is fundamental to understanding Australia’s history and the global narrative of human origins. We therefore believe these significant sites need to be managed and preserved. In support of this, we are focused on developing long-term collaborations and research partnerships with Aboriginal communities, universities, corporate organisaitons, government agencies and generous donors around the country to develop research projects which have social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits.
It is through your support that Rock Art Australia can fund this fundamental research. We invite you to consider making a tax-deductible donation.
Your gift directly contributes to major scientific breakthroughs in the field, and we simply cannot do it without you.
We are working across the country and internationally, funding five groundbreaking seed projects:
- Rock art, archaeology and climate change in the Wulk (Red Lily Lagoon) region, Manilakarr Clan Estate, Western Arnhem Land.
- Kimberley Rock Art Virtual Reality (VR) Program for immersive learning, research, conservation and engagement.
- Shadows of Time: Understanding Fading Pigments in Kimberley Rock Art.
- NSW Aboriginal Heritage Office Site Information Database to preserve and make accessible documentation of thousands of rock art sites along Sydney’s northern beaches, and.
- The impact of sea level rise on humans in Indonesia and the origins of new rock art styles, technological change and seafaring.
These projects are exploring new questions, uncovering remarkable discoveries, and utilising cutting-edge technologies. They are fostering new partnerships and generating meaningful knowledge about our Australian heritage. These seed projects lay the foundation for larger, multi-year initiatives that will deepen our understanding of Australia’s story.
We are also supporting two major multi-year Australian Research Council-funded projects in Victoria and the Kimberley:
- Before and after the Last Ice Age: GunaiKurnai archaeology along the Snowy, which aims to reveal the rich Aboriginal history of GunaiKurnai Country, in Gippsland Victoria, by excavating a network of sites dating back to >52,000 years. This project expects to generate new knowledge in archaeology and palaeoclimatology and will include on-Country community cultural heritage research training and public education initiatives.
- Unlocking environmental archives of the Kimberley’s past, which is a study of the environment and climate of the Kimberley region over the last 60,000. A key outcome of this project is a paleoenvironmental e-atlas.
